Common questions

How can I create users/roles/databases/...?

You can leverage the default admin user to create users/roles/databases/... as you wish.

Can I access metrics/logs of my databases?

Metrics and logs of databases are automatically forwarded to your provisioned metrics SysEleven Observability tenant.

You can find more information about provisioned metrics on the SysEleven Observability documentation.

Are multi-region database clusters supported?

DBaaS does not support multi-region database clusters. Database instances are provisioned within a single region for simplicity and ease of management.

Why do all requests come from 192.168.x.y?

To ensure optimal distribution of incoming traffic and to enhance the fault tolerance of the database infrastructure, DBaaS utilizes a load balancer. The load balancer acts as an intermediary between the applications and the databases. Network Address Translation (NAT) is used to manage the translation of private IP addresses used within the database environment into a single public IP address that is visible to external applications.

Can I connect to my databases using a private network?

Yes, you can choose between private and public (or both) networking for your database. If you choose private networking, we will share a OpenStack network with you which allows access to the database. Connectivity to the database should be established by connecting the network to a router.

Be aware, that deleting the database deletes the network as well and thus all ports in it. For this reason we strongly advise against connecting other VMs to this network directly but rather through a router.

What happens during maintenance windows?

To ensure optimal performance, security, and reliability of databases, scheduled maintenance windows are periodically designated for routine maintenance activities. These maintenance windows are carefully planned to minimize disruption to services and maximize the efficiency of maintenance tasks. During a maintenance window, the following activities, among others, may take place:

  • Software Updates: Essential updates, patches, and security fixes may be applied to the underlying infrastructure and database software.
  • Performance Optimization: Database performance may be fine-tuned during maintenance windows to address any identified bottlenecks or inefficiencies.

Database instance most likely will experience only short downtime.

Are all resources (CPU/RAM) of the flavor available to the database?

We currently reserve 1.5 CPU and 1.5GB memory on each node for system management software.

Can third-party tools be used with DBaaS?

Yes, in general. SysEleven does not support third-party tools. Selection, operation, and maintenance of such tools are the customer’s responsibility.
